New US legislation would give extended federal protections to journalists as GOP politicians and their ilk in America target the media

At a time in America when polarization and ‘political cool points’ trump nearly everything, the one channel for people to continue to access free and open information remains under dire threat. Politicians particularly the GOP want nothing more than to see the media dismantled.

But the feds are trying to prevent that. According to reports, a bipartisan bill in Washington has now surfaced amid those attacks on the press. In that bipartisan bill, journalists would be given extended federal protection(s) in terms of protecting their sources in important investigations and stories. It would also extend or afford the ability for electronic devices and computers to be protected in the sense of seizures by authorities and later challenging the move in court.

Formally known as the PRESS Act, the bill is in response to the previous Trump administration having illegally seized records from numerous journalists at CNN; The Post, and even the New York Times.
