Some UK banks are set to be investigated over claims that they illegally closed customer accounts over ‘political stances’

A new Treasury investigation is coming down the pipeline. According to the government, an investigation has been opened into claims that a series of banks have been shuttering customer accounts based on political stances they may not agree with.

Controversial talking head Nigel Farage is leading the charge in criticizing banks over claims that they’re closing accounts of customers without their knowledge. Farage alike an Anglican priest claims that his account was closed over his alleged own political beliefs that his bank did not agree with. Conservatives claim the moves have a ‘chilling’ effect on free speech but it remains unclear to what extent accounts are actually being closed.

Some of the upcoming investigations are reportedly due to involve Coutts the 327-year-old private financial institution that actually includes members of the Royal Family as their clients.
