Scores of people have been charged in the attempted coup in Brazil that nearly saw its government overthrown

Just a short time after the country’s now infamous coup attempt scores of locals are headed to prison for their role in the attempted effort. According to the office of the prosecutor general, scores of people have been charged with varying crimes in relation to the attack on the Brazilian governments; its buildings, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential palace. The attacks largely noted by critics and international papers bore wide resemblance to the terrorist attack on the U.S Capitol that occurred on 6 January 2021.

Officials aren’t calling it a terrorist attack because under Brazilian law it would’ve had to have elements of xenophobia or something similar. The group has been charged with armed criminal association, violent attempt to subvert the democratic state of law, staging a coup, and damage to public property, the prosecutor general’s office said in a statement Monday night.

More people are expected to be charged as investigations and ID’ing suspects continues throughout the country.
