Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died in prison, Kremlin suspected to be behind death

Opposition leader Navalny who spent his life fighting for a free Russia from the grip of Vladamir Putin is believed to be dead. According to a statement from the prison that was holding him, prison officials claim he suddenly passed away after a walk though no cause has been disclosed.

The Lowdown

“On February 16, 2024, in penal colony No. 3, convict A.A. Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness,” prison service for the Yamalo-Nenets region, said in a statement on its website.

“The facility’s medical workers immediately arrived at the scene and an emergency medical team was called in. All necessary resuscitation measures have been carried out, but they did not yield positive results. Emergency medics confirmed the death of the convict,” the statement added.

The reported death has sparked international condemnation with many pointing directly at Vladimir Putin who has long been accused of intentionally targeting Navalny in recent years. Navalny had been detained at he colony which is located just above the Arctic Circle.
