Republicans are in total chaos as the power struggle of all power struggle emerges as GOP takes House

Kevin McCarthy lost three rounds of formal voting that would’ve allowed him to assume the role of Speaker of the House today. According to reports, McCarthy and Republicans have gone home for the day amid an intense power struggle between more sane Republicans and those along the lines of the far and hard right. Over the weekend, McCarthy attempted to quash opposition to his Speakership by offering up a number of hardline far-right concessions but even that didn’t work.

McCarthy is prepared to go hell or high water nuclear to assume power. But that’s what makes McCarthy a bad choice — he wants to rule and not work for the American people.

On the other side of the coin, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries otherwise managed to get nearly all of the votes on throughout all of the 3 ballots. This is the first time since 1923 that such a process has failed to go through back when it took more than 9 ballots to make such happen.

The New York Times has been keeping a scoreboard.
