Here’s how Russia got ‘Merchant of Death’ Viktor Bout back, but can Russia be trusted?

Reports out Friday are painting an interesting picture as to how Russia managed to get Viktor Bout back. According to multiple reports, America agreed to release the infamous arms dealer on the condition(s) that he: not cash in via movies or books, projects, or another monetary gain. He is also indefinitely banned from ever travelling to the United States ever again, though, it is unclear if America’s Russian counterparts will enforce any of these conditions.

With Bout now back in Russia American courts and government officials actually won’t have the authority to reach beyond Russia ‘s borders for punishment. This led multiple critics to become sceptical of the terms of the deal because now Bout is entirely out of the reach of the Americans. Some experts have even pointed out that America would have to know in advance if Bout were to receive funds; book deals, or other projects within American borders in order to seize or stop them.

A clemency order published Friday by the Americans reads:

‘The said Viktor Bout shall not accept or otherwise receive any financial benefit, directly or indirectly, in any manner or amount, from any book, movie, or other publication or production, in any form or media, about the circumstances surrounding the instant offense or commutation,’ it says.
