An earthquake hit Morocco overnight and has now killed more than 600 people as authorities race to investigate

Sad news in Morocco this morning following reports of a huge earthquake that has now killed more than 600 people according to local authorities. Initially, the death toll stood at 296 but has since quickly risen.

Reports indicate that a lot of the damage happened in villages from the Atlas Mountains to the historic city of Marrakesh. At least 150 of those people were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment as authorities continue to investigate and recover. The centre of the tremor on Friday occurred near the town of Ighil in Al Haouz Province, around 44 miles south of Marrakech. The quake according to formal examinations came in at a 6.8 magnitude.
