Here’s what the new deal between US-Canada means for asylum seekers as countries battle to keep out those in need

Against the backdrop of a tough re-election campaign American President Joe Biden is also attempting to tackle the country’s influx of asylum seekers at the border(s.)

In Canada this week for meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, both leaders managed to hash out an agreement that would otherwise seek to severely limit or entirely stop (in some circumstances) asylum seekers crossing into Canada. Canada first raised concerns about the matter after the country experienced a huge influx asylum seekers from the southern border.

Initially, asylum seekers had crossed into the state of Texas before being unlawfully migrated to New York under false pretences by Governr Greg Abbott. Some of those asylum seekers moved on to Canada which triggered the so-called Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) to be extended to the entire US-Canada border.

The White House has released a factsheet on the updated border agreement.
