Twitter has now announced that major high profile public figures are set to get a slightly different form of verification on top of the traditional verification Twitter always has had. According to the company, now owned by Elon Musk, grey badges indicating an ‘official’ status will be added to high profile figures to further ensure authenticity. The move comes against the backdrop of heavy criticism that the site’s new $8 a month subscription service would lead to people intentionally misrepresenting themselves with just about anyone’s identity.
Critics are already concerned that the least obvious of the two symbols will be even further confusing for people. Using dark mode for example (which many do) makes the symbol obsolete and most wouldn’t be able to notice it.
