TikTok has a wide ranging new safety update to its platform, here’s what to know and why

Video platform TikTok has finally issued a massive change to its safety policies amid a wide number of cases where online abuse has become rampant on the platform. According to the company, the new rules are going to take flight in a matter of days however enforcement of such rules will be the real challenge. Internet users tend to be pretty crafty with inventing new ways to circumvent online rules.

The announcement was formally announced by Tik Tok via its newsroom but it remains unclear how the company will actually enforce the rules entirely.

“Though these ideologies have long been prohibited on TikTok, we’ve heard from creators and civil society organizations that it’s important to be explicit in our Community Guidelines,” Cormac Keenan, the company’s head of trust and safety, said in a statement announcing the changes.“On top of this, we hope our recent feature enabling people to add their pronouns will encourage respectful and inclusive dialogue on our platform.”
