Facebook is threatening to ban the sharing of news in Canada because it doesn’t want to pay publishers for their work

The battle over paying news publishers is making waves once more. According to a ruling in Canada, a new piece of legislation is making its way through the House of Commons. That legislation like other parts of the world aims to force sites like Facebook to pay up to publishers when the site aggregates news from publishers around the globe.

Facebook denies that it benefits from having newspapers on its platform, though, it quite literally does because that means people share more content and spend more time on Facebook doing so.

“If this draft legislation becomes law, creating globally unprecedented forms of financial liability for news links or content, we may be forced to consider whether we continue to allow the sharing of news content on Facebook in Canada as defined under the Online News Act,” Meta states according to the Verge.
