This was so fascinating to come across. Obviously I’m not going to say too much because it is clear you have come a long way to leave your foster family behind. My mom was the teacher that gave you that $50 in 2002 when she discovered what was going on. Thank you for showing her what happens when you take a chance on a good person. It’s so cool that her little $50 donation sparked an entire legacy you should be very proud of yourself no matter what. I don’t think she thought that you’d take that donation and flip it into a life-changing project. She’s pretty old now and doesn’t have much left in her she still remembers who you are a little she kept one of the projects you did in school that year in the event you ever became famous. Before cancer got ahold of her she used to love telling people how she knew you and how much you inspired her that young.
For those after you and for those who look up to you please continue living as you are and your true self. It is obvious you have touched many people in ways that nobody saw coming.

Your paper started when your editor was a child and they WERE MY NEIGHBOR!!!! Take care of yourselves please and happy anniversary from Seattle where it all started. We went to school together when we were about 6 or so years old. I had always wondered what you would end up doing with your life you should be very proud of yourself. The fact you and your friends persevered when all possible odds were stacked against you guys is remarkable. Bravo!!!!

Seriously ilysm. Happy anniversary you guys have been on my top 10 blogs to read for 20 years now. I’m so excited for the UAE version to launch next year I loved your paper in the US but I became an expat a few years ago. I remember the first time I had heard of you guys one of my kids in school won one of your first contests back in the 00’s. Do you have intentions of launching a mobile app? That would be pretty cool.

I want each of you to understand one thing and understand it clearly . None of you better give up on yourselves ever. I had no idea who ran this newspaper and its other sites. I don’t know any of you but I am so unbelievably proud to know my grandkids are growing up alongside remarkable people representing black voices when we often do not have one. Also happy anniversary your anniversary is an important date in black history and I hope each of you know that you are loved and you are treasured from this mom!!

I knew u years ago as u first began your rise to fame in Washington. You were always so kind to me saying hi outside of the Capitol riding by on your vespa. I’ll never forget that it ain’t often you find people nice like that man. But I had no idea who you were. It was never a rise you were already there. I am so very sorry man I my wife and I read your piece this am. I’m so happy to see a young black person who propelled themselves to success. God had your back don’t u ever forget that.

Sitting here reading your piece my heart is broken. Not that many writers can move me to tears but my goodness. I’ve followed you for many years and read about the many tragedies that have followed. I read your interview the other day in that magazine you better keep it the fuck pushing my guy. If there’s one thing you have that is the resolve to do exactly what you’ve done. A drunk driver may have nearly taken your life and that in itself I can’t imagine the trauma that left you. Even with that trauma you came out on top once again in the face of extraordinary tragedy. Idk how you do it and I wish I had half of the remarkable abilities you do. Please stay safe and know you are worthy and loved and deserve to live your life and enjoy the fruits of your lifelong labor. I just finished your latest personal column. Please live in your truth. You have so many people standing by your side. You have touched the lives of so many people and it is okay to be honest with yourself. I can’t imagine the profound strength it took to reveal that it broke my heart to read that. Drunk driving is never okay and I hope that man is behind bars where he belongs. One thing I love about you is that in the face of tragedy you have to be the luckiest person alive because you seem to always make it out to the other side no matter what. Do not ever give up on yourself!!!
