New York pols gift themselves 29% pay increase meanwhile the streets of NYC look like something straight out of a dystopian movie

Amid soaring crime; subway murders down under, high inflation and a cost of living crises nothing says legislating like a pay raise for the already wealthy politicians of New York. This week Democratic legislators voted overwhelmingly in favour of a mass 29% pay increase to their already high $110,000 taxpayer funded salaries. Dem governor Kathy Hochul has 30 days to agree to or veto the measure, however, that can be overridden if 2/3 of the place votes in favor of the measure entirely.

This makes their massive salaries the highest of such kind for legislators in the nation and about 3x higher than that of the average salary for ordinary New Yorkers. An ordinary New Yorker on average earns about $43,045 a year and even that is barely enough for many to get by in one of the most expensive places on earth. Legislators would also temporarily be allowed to keep raking in unlimited outside income until 2025 further enriching themselves than they already were beforehand.

If passed the measure is expected to go into play on 1 January.
