As protests continue in Iran, morality police are to be scrapped as the government races to stop a stunning uprising

Iranian government officials are reportedly prepared to scrap the country ‘s so-called ‘morality police’ months into deadly protests that have gripped the country. The morality police for those who don’t know are the so-called police force that enforces ‘customary’ laws like the one that led to the murder of Mahsa Amini. Amini was killed by the country’s morality police after they rounded her up earlier this year under claims she was not properly wearing her hijab in public.

Amini’s murder sparked nationwide protests and calls for the current Iranian regime to be ousted.

Mohammad Jafar Montazeri the country’s Attorney General, per reports in the country, has now announced at an event on Sunday that the morality police are no more. It is unclear to what exetent Montazeri has the power to do so as their control sits with the Ministry rather than the Judiciary.

“The morality police had nothing to do with the judiciary and have been shut down from where they were set up,” he said.
