American basketball star Britney Griner sentenced to 9 years in prison for possession of pot in Russia + swap details emerge

Editors Note: However multiple reports out Thursday appear to suggest that despite Russia ‘s claims otherwise prisoner swap negotiations are underway. It could take weeks before any reported negotiations would happen and an exact date of the swap is unknown. Russia is believed to want a man known by the name of “The Merchant of Death” in exchange for Griner. He is largely known as a deadly international arms dealer.

Britney Griner may soon be coming home if new reports are to be understood. According to Huff Post, US basketball star Britney Griner is the subject of negotiations for a prisoner swap between the Americans and the Russians.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had previously confirmed that the United States had made an offer to swap Viktor Bout (The Merchant of Death) for trapped Americans Paul Whelan and Britney Griner.

These were Griner ‘s words when she had initially pleaded guilty in a Moscow court. On Thursday despite reports of the swap, she was sentenced to 9 years in prison for bringing weed into the region.

“I want to also apologize to my parents, my siblings, the Phoenix Mercury organization back at home, the amazing women of the WNBA, and my amazing spouse back at home,” she added. Griner has been married to her wife, Cherelle Griner, since 2019.

“I know everybody keeps talking about ‘political pawn’ and politics, but I hope that that is far from this courtroom,” she said, according to multiple outlets. “I want to say again that I had no intent of breaking Russian laws. I had no intent. I did not conspire or plan to commit this crime.”
