This week Russia ‘s Supreme Court took up a case that probably will spell the legal end of The International Memorial Society (which consists of about 50 groups) because the government doesn’t like the fact that they consistently document Russia ‘s crimes against its own people. The court eventually did adjourn the hearing until 14 December however it is widely expected that prosecutors likely will win their case to dissolve the group.
Russia ‘s ironic strategy is that they want media outlets and orgs like this one to register as foreign agents. Such a registration would then require the wording of “foreign agent” to be placed on anything published. Critics have pounced on the move by the Kremlin as yet another move by Vladamir Putin ‘s government to quash dissidents.
A statement from the organisation reads as follows:
“We will appeal up to the European court level,” Oleg Orlov said, “and we’ll keep working one way or another.” reads a statement according to the AP.
