ROME, ITALY — Two barely legal American students have been sentenced to life in prison in Italy. This week the Italian court system found Finnegan Lee Elder, 21 and Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, 20 guilty on all counts in the stabbing of Vice Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega to death in July 2019.
It has long been alleged that the two stabbed the officer because he was trying to retrieve a reported stolen backpack from them. Prosecutors successfully argued that the two should receive the maximum sentence of life. Italy does not presently have a death sentence on the books.
