The Apple App Store team is apparently of the fairly financially petty type. According to several reports, the Apple team has decided to kick Fortnite out of its store over claims that it launched a rule-violating pay scheme of its own. What you might expect doesn’t quite make sense considering nobody ‘s sure why Epic Games made the scheme to begin with.
This week it emerged that Epic Games has altered Fortnite so that pay schemes allow it in its whole to collect fees from its game — rather than have to give up a 30% cut to Apple. It’s worth noting that for years, Epic Games has thoroughly enjoyed use of Apple ‘s software and development services.
Apple announced the removal hours after the initial news of the new scheme broke. As a result, Epic Games has reportedly filed suit against Apple alleging monopolistic tactics and discrimination. It remains unclear just how far the lawsuit may actually go.
“Apple imposes unreasonable and unlawful restraints to completely monopolize both markets and prevent software developers from reaching the over one billion users of its mobile devices (e.g., iPhone and iPad) unless they go through a single store controlled by Apple, the App Store, where Apple exacts an oppressive 30% tax on the sale of every app,” the lawsuit alleges.
