Duped by Turbotax? You might be getting a settlement check in the mail – What To Know

Turbotax in recent years has faced increased scrutiny over the abnormally high fees one might encounter on their service (determined of course by your tax situation.) In the midst of all that criticism, Turbotax is set to begin sending out settlement checks totaling in excess of $141m. Most customers will get about $30 in the mail.

You do not need to fill anything out. According to the website, this process along with the checks will be done automatically.

The settlement is part of a broader crackdown on Turbotax which is notorious for attempting to steer low-income tax filers from free services instead of theirs.

“TurboTax’s predatory and deceptive marketing cheated millions of low-income Americans who were trying to fulfill their legal duties to file their taxes,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a press release. “Today we are righting that wrong and putting money back into the pockets of hardworking taxpayers who should have never paid to file their taxes.”
