High Court Row: Celebrities go to war with The Daily Mail over the paper’s scandalous past

It was quite the first court day in London today after Prince Harry arrived at the high-court heairng for the case of numerous high-profile celebs v The Daly Mail. In the original suit, multiple celebs including Elizabeth Hurley; Sir Elton John, Prince Harry and others all claimed that the paper was or has notoriously engaged in the act of phone hacking and invading people’s personal privacy.

For those that remember, phone hacking in the UK media actually became a national topic a few years ago after the fall of News of the World. News of the World at the time was found to have in the most extraordinary fashion hacked several cellphones in the name of obtaining information for a story.

First up, Associated Newspapers which owns The Daily Mail probably came out the biggest winner of the day. The judge overseeing the case agreed with the company that the publication of the 73 journalists and executives named in the suit would cause ‘grave damage’ at least for now. It is unclear if the temporary ruling would if at all become permanently mute.

IN ATTENDANCE: Sir Elton John, Prince Harry Duke of Sussex, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost and numerous other high-profile celebs. Harry flew in especially for the occasion.

The Daily Mail used what is known as the Human Rights Act to defend itself from having to name the 73 individuals involved. Even more, ironically, this is among many other pieces of legislation that the paper itself and as a whole has campaigned against on its website.

A hot tid-bit that The Daily Mail reportedly doesn’t want the public to know or see. Several years ago as mentioned above, there was something called the Leveson Inquiry. That inquiry dove deep into several news operations across the U.K, before finding a number of them (infamously News of the World) invaded the privacy of others and on a number of occasions had hacked private cell phones. The Mail at best is trying to keep the evidence they provided to officials in this case from being used in this case. Critics of course have wondered what they’re hiding.
