Republicans are trying to cheat Democracy in North Carolina here’s what you need to know

A consequential case before the Supreme Court is set to be heard this week. The case of course if granted in favor of the Republicans is poised to have profound consequences on elections going forward. According to the docket, the case involves an argument brought forth by Republicans in the state who want the overall power of state lawmakers increased. This power particularly pertains to elections of Congress and that of the Presidency.

GOPers brought the case in the state after they were previously blocked by a Democratic majority following their attempt at gerrymandering districts. It was ultimately found at the time that the maps unfairly favored Republicans over all else. GOPers are of course miffed by this and are seeking to have this heard before the Supreme Court.

Essentially GOPers are arguing that the power over federal elections sits with state legislatures and Congress and no one else.

“This is the single most important case on American democracy — and for American democracy — in the nation’s history,” said former federal judge Michael Luttig, a prominent conservative who has joined the legal team defending the North Carolina court decision.
