EU parliament declares Hungary an autocracy not a democracy here’s what that means going forward

Europe’s parliament has begun what is understood to be a series of moves against Hungary. This country’s officials believe is quickly deteriorating into an autocracy at speeds not previously recognized. A new report out this week details in great length many of the concerns as laid out by officials and why parliament now says the country must stop claiming to be a Democracy.

“Overall, [The European Parliament] expresses regrets that the lack of decisive EU action has contributed to a breakdown of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary, and turning one of its member states into a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy,” the report read.

“There is increasing consensus among experts that Hungary is no longer a democracy,” the report added. The report also details how officials are ‘gravely’ concerned about some issues regarding otherwise vulnerable groups and communities in Hungary (ethnic minorities; LGBTQ+ and so on.) Many are now calling for the bloc to suspend Hungary’s share of the upcoming EU fund pot ($1.1 trillion) that is typically shared amongst members of the bloc according to Reuters and several other outlets.

The motion regarding this report passed with 433 votes in favour, 123 against and 28 abstentions. However right-wing members amongst the crowd quickly claimed the information was based on ‘vague assumptions and opinions.’

“This text is yet another attempt by the federalist European political parties to attack Hungary and its Christian-democratic, conservative government for ideological reasons,” they claimed in a minority position statement attached to the report.
