“Feel Good” story about homeless man, allegedly a scam

Earlier this year, uh, one of the sweetest stories we’d written about surfaced online. At the time, uh, it involved a homeless man by the name of Johnny Babbitt — who not only didn’t have much money but he also didn’t have a home.

Enter: Kate McClure and her boyfriend Mark.  The original story claimed that Bobbitt, uh, encountered Kate and her partner on an alleged night in which she ran out of gas on her way home.

This story gets pretty interesting. Bobbitt originally claimed that he had given his last $20 to McClure out of the kindness of his “heart” only for the story to take a weird twist hours later.  The media, per reports,  quickly reported on the “feel good story” citing that McClure and her boyfriend “had not only taken Bobbitt in, but, eventually began a GoFundMe campaign to support his future and get him off the streets”.

Now, indeed, authorities have intervened amid claims discovered by prosecutors in the case that the whole thing is entirely a lie. The Daily Mail reports that McClure allegedly “already knew Bobbitt, and,  had conspired with him and her partner Mark to use the so-called story to gain immense financial wealth”.

So much wealth, that,  the trio would go on to collect about $400,000 from donors online who took Bobbitt’s alleged story to heart.  NBC10 now reports that the trio is set to face conspiracy charges, and,  fraud with intent charges following the shocking discovery.
