U.S poised to begin studying positive and negatives of ‘safe injection sites’ as drugs (esp fentanyl) overtake American streets

Against the backdrop of scary instances involving drugs, America is about to take on a whole new kind of study. According to reports, government officials want to know if the presence of safe injection sites would otherwise improve harm reduction efforts and reduce otherwise terrifying cases of overdose (and sometimes even death.)

The study comes after a $5m grant was doled out in hopes of launching two new such centers in Rhode Island and in New York. Both are intended to allow people to safely inject drugs; receive treatment, and other common social services.

AP reports that researchers hope to enroll roughly 1,000 adult US participants.
