A super strain of gonorrhea has been detected in the United States, here’s what you need to know as experts scramble to investigate

A super strain of gonorrhea believed to be capable of evading all possible antibiotic treatments has been detected in the United States. According to health authorities in Massachusetts, two people with no known history to each other have come into contact with the super strain. The fact that neither of the two unnamed or identified individuals have any history of encountering each other has alerted authorities to a potential and highly likely public health emergency.

Authorities in the area note that because the two original cases have no connection to each other the STD is believed to be spreading and contact tracing is underway throughout the region. It is the first time the super strain has been found stateside after having previously been seen in the U.K and Austria according to previously published media reports that we could find on this health matter.

What is gonorrhea?

It as a disease can cause very painful like sensations or burning sensations when urinating or an unpleasant vaginal discharge. Some patients in some cases may not experience this at all which is why it is mission critical to get tested regularly especially if you are sexually active.

If left untreated, the infection can lead to serious complications, including infertility and potentially life-threatening pelvic inflammatory disease in women. In pregnant women, it has also been linked to permanent blindness in newborns.
