News of the omicron COVID variant certainly has the world once again on high alert. Initially understood to have been detected in Botswana (it is unclear if it originated there) the variant has now spread to at least four other countries. Those countries include countries as far as China to the city of Belgium in Europe. It is not understood to have made it onto American soil as of this writing.
However, New York ‘s governor Kathy Hochul confirmed on Friday evening that the state is preparing for the worst just in case. Elective surgeries have been halted and hospital space will be beefed up in any anticipation of spikes in hospital stays and infections. This move is being made mostly because nobody knows not even scientists if this variant is vaccine resistant. It will be up to hospitals if elective surgeries will take place.
This variant is understood to be heavily mutated and likely deadly though the exact extent still remains widely unknown.
