A 90-year-old woman and a wild Chinese phone scam

HONG KONG, CHINA — An extraordinary phone scam; a 90-year-old woman, and a con artist on the phone. Those are the three main ingredients in a stunning story emerging out of China these days. According to local media reports, a 90-year-old woman is out more than $32m in a bizarre phone scam after being targeted by looters.

Police say that the woman contacted them back in March after learning that something didn’t quite sound right. The calls had apparently began coming in August 2020 from a man and a younger man who claimed to be law enforcement officials from mainland China. When the rouse kicked off, she had been allegedly duped into believing that something had gone awry with her identity. Both the man and another 19-year-old man have been arrested in connection to the scandal.

This scam joins a series of other scams that have also hit Hong Kong ‘s wealthy. The woman reportedly lives in an area of HK known as “The Peak” the wealthiest part of the area. In October 2020, in the same area, another woman was also targeted over false claims that she somehow was involved in money laundering schemes.
