A holiday letter from our family to yours

Dear friends; readers, supporters, and new readers,

Each of you mean something to me. For almost my entire life, many of you have supported my then aspirations into being a blogger and what would become of my full fledged journalism career almost 20 years later. Almost 20 years and a college degree later, you could say that I’ve cemented parts of my career. This holiday season as many of us are alone; without our families (I sadly won’t be able to watch Christmas movies on repeat with my niece and nephew this year), I hope each of us can learn to appreciate what we have and what we have with those in which we love.

2020 has taught us that in the blink of an eye and against the backdrop(s) of governments that don’t care about us —- we are largely out here to survive on our own. Community should be everything. Community should be so normal that we get along with everyone rather than life being an episode of the Haves and the Have Nots.

But we have allot of work to do. That is one reason I do my best as the editor-in-chief of this newspaper to keep the negative headlines to a minimal and I do not often allow my editors to publish opinion pieces. I shy away from greenlighting opinion pieces because historically with other newspapers they tend to sow division.

The message I’d like to send this holiday season is the opposite. Our efforts this holiday season are to inform and encourage rather than to inform and divide. Sometimes we do get our hands on stories that are controversial, thus, we do our best to report on them without appearing like we are sowing division.

I wish each of you and your families a very Merry Christmas even though most of us are turning to Zoom to see them this year. I hope each of you are in the best space possible to ride out the Coronavirus given the failure of governments to help their own people. My heart is with those that have lost their loved ones; their Dads, Moms, sisters and others. And if you’re lucky enough to to currently live with your family —- god please hug your loved ones. Hug them like you haven’t seen them even though you live with them.
