Here’s how to watch HBO and Netflix with your friends while you quarantine (or may be apart for other reasons)

Quarantine has brought me closer than ever to the few people I actually count as friends. We’ve watched countless hours of tv; binged All American, and currently are watching the ever-so-juicy Greenleaf. Thanks to apps like Scener (a Google Chrome app) we’ve been able to without issue stream together from afar; chat while doing so, and take turns with the remote.

Scener is an online web-app that runs as if it were a movie theatre. The app opens up to a theatre room whereas you create your room; select your remote, and select either HBO or Netflix to login with. After selecting a room you have the option of sending your theatre code to a friend so they can join. Scener actually also comes with a viewing party function (you can physically see and speak to them also.)

That is the one big difference from the Netflix Party app (which often doesn’t work at all no matter how many times you try.). Scener rarely if ever has issues.

Here’s how to download the service so you can hit the theatre with your friends.

  1. You will actually need Google Chrome, bu don’t actually have to have it open.
  2. Go to this link to directly get the app.
  3. Create an account (which will remain signed in and help you keep track of your movie buddies. It will also stop and pause where you left off no matter the show.)
  4. As of Saturday, they also offer HBO viewing.

The service is absolutely free (but you have to have HBO/Netflix to stream.)
