The Lowdown
According to the Washington Post, the execution which was largely derided as inhumane and cruel was carried out after The Supreme Court ruled that the state could continue despite comments from critics. The Post also notes that the shocking exeuction is the first of its kind. Smith was previously unable to be executed two years ago because officials had failed to properly and safely connect an IV line.
