Meghan Markle: I was only treated like a Black woman once I started to date Prince Harry

The Duchess of Sussex is back with her second episode of the family’s Archwell audio podcast. In the Spotify based episode, Markle touched on this week ‘s topics with none other than American music legend Mariah Carey. Carey sat down for a chat with the sort-of ex-royal where the two spoke about being biracial and how that has challenged them in some way.

In one part of the episode, Carey admits that she herself suffered being biracial early on in life. At one point, Carey had to frequently move throughout her life which felt like she didn’t “fit in anywhere.” In another, Markle points out how actresses like Halle Berry have been automatically treated like a ‘Black’ woman simply because she is darker skinned than Markle or Carey.

“And I think for us, it’s very different because we’re light-skinned,” Meghan said. “You’re not treated as a Black woman. You’re not treated as a White woman. You sort of fit in between.”
