Rep Jackie Speier who was notoriously shot in 1978 on a disastrous trip to Guyana attempting to save the lives of 900 members of a bizarre cult is stepping down from her post in California. In a video message released this week, the longtime Congresswoman pretty much chalked her announcement up to the fact that she misses her husband and her life at home. The 71-year-old Democrat is the latest to announce retirement amid the battle for Washington as midterms are just around the corner.
“It’s time for me to come home,” the 71-year-old said, per the AP. “Time for me to be more than a weekend wife, mother and friend.”
“Forty-three years ago this week, I was lying on an airstrip in the jungles of Guyana with five bullet holes in my body. I vowed that if I survived, I would dedicate my life to public service. I lived and I served. It’s been a remarkable journey that has surpassed my wildest dreams,” the Washington Post quotes her as having stated.
Democrats will continue to have a tough time in the midterms as misinformation and lies from the Republican party continue to plague much of America.
