Alabama has carried out the world’s first recorded nitrogen gas execution

Convicted killer Kenneth Eugene Smith is dead. According to reports, the U.S state of Alabama carried out the world’s first nitrogen gas execution on Smith following a previous failed attempt to kill him two years ago.

The Lowdown

According to the Washington Post, the execution which was largely derided as inhumane and cruel was carried out after The Supreme Court ruled that the state could continue despite comments from critics. The Post also notes that the shocking exeuction is the first of its kind. Smith was previously unable to be executed two years ago because officials had failed to properly and safely connect an IV line.
