Democracy in Nicaragua is once again under siege by Daniel Ortega and his family. According to reports, the dictator has unveiled new legislation that would make he and his wife co-Presidents of the South American nation.

The Lowdown

Human rights groups and critics far-and-wide are calling foul on new laws being pushed in Nicaragua a nation in South America. According reports, Nicaragua’s dictator President Daniel Ortega has unveiled legislation that would all but make he and his wife Rosario Murillo co-Presidents of the country. The legislation which has to pass first is expected to pass because the country’s ruling Sardinista party controls all government facilities.

The new legislation comes amid a wider crackdown by Ortega which has seen dissidents; journalists, critics, and those in between arrested exiled or worse by Ortega ‘s administration. Ortega began his crackdown several years ago amid an effort to centralise power in the country. It is estimated that thousands of innocent people.

What happened?

According to a UN report released in September, the situation in Nicaragara despite the government’s efforts to have it appear otherwise has worsened significantly over the past year. Human rights abuses; wrongful detentions, violence against detainees, and outright intimidation of dissidents and political opponents.

In the same UN report, despite the government’s efforts to make it appear otherwise, Ortega ‘s government is directly responsible for scores of deaths; detainments, and the torture of Nicaragua ‘s own people.
