New York State has officially declared a public health emergency over the further detection of Polio in its waterways. The first detections came earlier this year near Rockland County but have since spread to multiple areas across the state causing cause for concern among those who may not be vaccinated against the virus. On Friday, New York ‘s Governor Kathy Hochul declared an emergency after the virus yet again turned up in wastewater on Long Island.

It was previously discovered in wastewater in New York City, and in Rockland, Orange, and Sullivan counties, per CNN.

If you suspect that you have encountered polio you should limit contact with the public until further notice and you can be examined by a health official. This is nothing to mess with and should be taken very seriously as this virus can be fatal.
