According to BBC, the Home Office released a statement following news of the changes going public. In that statement, officials reiterated that anyone who crosses into the United Kingdom illegally (by boat or dangerous journey or other) will be denied the right to apply for citizenship. That is regardless of how much time would have passed since crossing. Critics pounced on the change citing that refugees are ‘still treated’ like second-class citizens.

The changes were first reported by the Free Movement Blog.
