GOPers are doing what GOPers do best in an effort to clamp down on the looming indictment of Donald J. Trump. Kevin McCarthy (leading the pack) appears to be taking a play out of the right-wing playbook threatening to deny so-called funding to local prosecutors who are closing in on Trump himself as a whole. Fed money only accounts for a fairly small portion of DA Bragg ‘s offices’ budget despite the way Republicans are making it seem.
“Your decision to pursue such a politically motivated prosecution—while adopting progressive criminal justice policies that allow career ‘criminals [to] run[ ] the streets’ of Manhattan — requires congressional scrutiny about how public safety funds appropriated by Congress are implemented by local law-enforcement agencies,” Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, James Comer, R-Ky., and Bryan Steil, R-Wis., wrote to Bragg on Monday.
Over the weekend, Kevin McCarthy tweeted the following further inciting the false idea that somehow Donald Trump is the victim of persecution rather than prosecution. We will “investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.”
It’s like a long con in reverse. Republicans are trying to use their positions to force Alvin Bragg (the District Attorney of Manhattan) to look the other way and drop any indcitments against Trump.
