Manuela Vitoria De Araujo Farias is making headlines this weekend for reasons that no tourist ever wants to experience. According to reports, Farias is facing execution in Bali over claims she illegally smuggled large quantities of cocaine in her luggage. Possession of such hard drugs in the country is often punishable by death. If authorities don’t back down from the case the young woman may die by firing squad according to pieces of information available about the case.

Possession of drugs in Indonesia is often punishable by very high fines; long prison sentences, and often the death penalty. Last month another tourist nearly faced the same fate after getting caught with heroin and meth in his luggage. Drug laws in places like Indonesia are often notoriously strict compared to countries in the west.
