DHAKA, BANGLADESH – Justice has been served today in Bangaldesh following the high-stakes ruling against deposed and fallen former leader Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was a notorious authoritarian that attempted to rule the country by force that was until a student-led protest helped spark the revolution that brought her down and eventually to justice. She was ousted from power last year before fleeing the country in typical dictator fashion.

The problem for local authorities now is complex. According to the case, Bangladeshi authorities have not been able to retrieve Hasina from neighboring India. In a shocking display of its own authoritarianism and corruption, India has refused all efforts by the country to return the exiled wanted criminal to Bangladesh. Hasina remains hidden and under protection in India despite international calls for her to be returned to her home country.

Check back this weekend only on Bazaar Daily for an exclusive digital special on the fall of Sheikh Hasina and how she is the latest example of how authoritarianism can’t survive in a modern world.
