Russia orders state-backed messenger app to be installed on all new devices beginning 1 September

But the app which is called Max is facing scrutiny amid what appear to be credible claims that it is a front for the government to spy on its users.

The Lowdown

Max a Russian rival to Whatsapp is making headlines. According to reports, the Russian state-backed messenger app will come to all phones, devices, and gadgets in the country beginning 1 September.  The rule appears to apply devices bought after the specified date.

The dramatic move comes as Russia continues its effort to suppress information it deems unkind to the Kremlin. Per the firm itself, the firm claims it has 18m registered app users.
