Italian lawmakers are demanding answers today amid reports that two Italian nationals have found themselves locked up inside Florida’s new and notorious Alligator Alcatraz.
The Lowdown
According to reports, lawmakers have identified the pair as Gaetano Mirabella Costa, 45, and Fernando Artese, 64. Opposition lawmaker Laura Boldrini who made the claims also claims that the pair is being punished inhumanely. In case it couldn’t get worse it does.
Another lawmaker Angelo Bonelli claimed that the pair on Tuesday was being held against their will in cages without proper basic human rights. It is the latest development in the scandal erupting from Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown which has been marred by allegations of human rights abuses.
On the part of the administration, officials claim that Costa overstayed his visa by at least seven years. In the case of Artese, he allegedly overstayed his time in the country by at least a decade.
CNN notes that Costa was detained after having spent some six months behind bars in an unrelated domestic violence case involving his ex-wife. According to the same report, Artese in his case was stopped after being collared during a traffic stop which led to the discovery of a warrant for his arrest on a driving violation.
