In a case of textbook definition of deception, a California man is free this week after serving 16 years of the massive sentence. Except there was a problem with how that conviction came to be.
The Lowdown
According to the case, Ajay Dev from Davis California was freed from prison on Thursday after a judge’s review found the discrepancies in evidence used against him in case.
Ajay originally from Nepal was falsely accused by his daughter that he was supposedly sexually abusing her for many years. Judge Jeanine Beronio reportedly determined he was framed so that so she could improve her chances of remaining in the United States.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Ajay adopted Sapna Dev a member of his family during a trip to the country in 1998. The case first unraveled after family members revealed in 2004 that Sapna revealed to them that she had made all the allegations out of spite and anger.
She alleged that the attacks happened following a 2004 breakup with her boyfriend and she blamed her adoptive father for it. She claimed that her adoptive father had been sexually abusing her for years until she moved out of the family home.
He ultimately spent 16 years in prison for crimes that never happened.
