The Lowdown

Legal trouble for the New York Times according to a new lawsuit filed in Los Angeles this week.  According to the suit, the Marubo Tribe of the Javari Valley (that’s the Brazilian Amazon) of about 2k people isn’t happy with the Times over this story (tap here.)

The story written by Jack Nicas dives into a number of things involving the tribe but notably that of the introduction of internet service to the tribe.  A while back Elon Musk ‘s Starlink was introduced bringing the tribe online.

But it got messy from there. The suit claims that the story paints the tribe as a group of people who basically weren’t able to handle something as modern as the internet.   The tribe on their part also claims that the story wrongfully paints members of their tribe as addicted to the likes of pornography.  In essence, that they struggled regardless of effort to adjust and adapt to the introduction of and the exposure to internet service for the first time.

The tribe is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages over the story.

In most of Nicas story, he paints the tribe as facing many of the issues that the modern world faces though tribe officials dispute nearly all of the story as inaccurate.  The suit also names TMZ and Yahoo as defendants claiming that the outlets helped amplify the Times reporting.
