A police volunteer is set to be sentenced on Monday in the case of the infamous murder last year that shook India. Sanjay Roy was convicted this week of murdering a trainee doctor at her place of employment last year. The 31-year-old trainee doctor at the time had been sleeping on the night of the attack after working a 36-hour shift. Per the case, Roy could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
What happened?
On 9 August 2024 last year, at a state-run hospital, the 31-year-old victim had just finished a 36-hour shift when she was brutally murdered while sleeping on that unfortunate night. NDTV reports.
Her body was first discovered at the time at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On the night of her murder, she went to sleep after a 36 hour shift in the hospital’s seminar hall. Her severely battered naked body was later found near a podium by a colleague.
Medical examinations at the time revealed the unidentified victim (she cannot lawfully be named) had been strangled and had injuries indicating she may have gave it her all in fighting back.
