Standoff ends in South Korea after arrest warrant issued for President Yoon Suk Yeol

Following the ill-advised attempt to impose martial law, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol is not under arrest. According to reports, a warrant was issued; however, authorities have failed to arrest Yeol after trouble with the military.

The Lowdown

Another political bomb is being sounded in South Korea following reports that authorities have moved on an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol. President Yeol previously attempted to impose martial law in the country and was met with swift backlash. Yonhap reports that anti-corruption officials and police have encountered military opposition to the arrest warrant, which is impeding their efforts.

Yeol ‘s December efforts to impose martial law sparked widespread protests that led to his swift impeachment.

UPDATE: 7:39 am 3 January 2024

According to the latest information on the matter, he has not been arrested despite police efforts. Police encountered heavy military opposition during their attempt at his official residence yesterday.
