Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov charged after refusing to help French authorities

Telegram’s billionaire co-founder is now in legal trouble in France. According to reports, prosecutors formally issued charges on Wednesday.

The Lowdown

On Wednesday, French authorities confirmed for the first time that Durov has been charged with aiding criminal activity (child exploitation, drugs, and particularly fraud.)

As of press time, Durov has since been released but must stay in France while the investigation plays out. He was released on a huge $5.6m bail.

He is accused of refusing to help authorities wiretap users suspected of engaging in criminal activity.
