The Lowdown
In the midst of ongoing protests, Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina and several other government officials have fled the country against the backdrop of demands by student and others for serious reforms and her own resignation. On Monday, students got their wish as it emerged that overnight Hasina fled in a military helicopter and her whereabouts remain unknown.
What happened?
Last month, Bangladesh became engulfed in protests that initially started peacefully.  At the time, students were protesting the quota system used to determine how or when government jobs are doled out. Heartbreakingly, scores of students were killed by Hasina’s savage government whom is understood to have fled to India to avoid any kind of honesty hour about her regime.
Students who participated in the demonstrations were upset at a discriminatory quota system used in reference to government job applications and hiring. However, during the onset of the protest was when the name-of-the-protest changed and instead became a demonstration to topple the autocratic government of Sheik Hasina.
