According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Sun has released more than a dozen powerful particles towards Earth that are expected to cause trouble for those of us down here.
The Lowdown
The research agency revealed on Wednesday that the solar particles from the sun were detected sometime in the last week. Many of those particles have already caused blackouts in parts of the Pacific and numerous other regions. NASA according to several reports has also stated that planet Earth might want to get use to such issues for a while as many more are expected over the coming weeks.
What are solar flares?
Solar flares are blasts of electromagnetic radiation that can explode outwards from sunspots. The flares can travel at the speed of light, and there are at least 12 known sunspots on the earth-facing side. Some reports suggest that the sun has produced at least 14 of them in the past 24 hours alone.
Space.com has more on the discovery of these sunspots and is tracking them as they happen.
