If California lawmakers get their way residents who find themselves the victim of unwarranted police violence may soon be compensated. According to a new piece of legislation, this would be the first of its kind in America and would give victims of police violence access to and a chunk of state compensation funds. The legislation appears to specifically address reparations if you will for those hardest hit by police.

AB-767 seeks to reduce some of the roadblocks people have to go through in order to access the compensation funds. The bill would allow the use of evidentiary pieces such as witness accounts; medical records, and other related things to prove victim-status of police brutality.
Current parts of the law would make it impossible for victims to receive compensation if they don’t cooperate with law enforcement at the scene of the crime. However, this bill would make that illegal if excessive force is found to have been used.
