The sheer gravity of the new allegations against China would at some point in the very near future have catastrophic consequences for the country. As the world learned Wednesday, the initial reports of the coronavirus emerging from a research lab in Wuhan appear to be true.

With a twist.

According to reports — U.S officials first raised red flags about the lab and their doings way back in 2018. That’s right, American officials reportedly knew that something was awry that long ago.

The Washington Post reports that the sensitive government cables viewed by the paper confirmed that officials indeed knew, er, but didn’t act fast enough. Cited as a “warning shot” the cables appear to have alerted officials to the fact that safety features among other things weren’t up to international standards within the laboratory.

“The cable was a warning shot,” a US official told the paper. “They were begging people to pay attention to what was going on.”
